Meet the Blogger: Danielle
Hi everyone!
I’m Danielle and I’m a first-year PhD student in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures. Though I am a first-year researcher, I spent the past year at the University of Glasgow working on an MLitt in Scottish History (which I receive my degree for at the end of this month – yay!). I also have a BA in English Literature and Language as well as another masters in Book Publishing and Writing. My current research is basically a massive culmination of all my disciplines as I look at textual and visual representations of race, gender and class in an early nineteenth-century, Glasgow-published comic magazine. Though I’ve always wanted to work toward a PhD (and force my family to call me ‘Dr’), I never imagined the process would include studying comics, so I’m fairly happy with my decision.
Though I studied Scottish History, I am most definitely not a native to this wonderful place. I grew up in West Texas (‘y’all’ is a permanent fixture in my vocabulary) and lived in Boston, Massachusetts for two years before moving to Glasgow. When I’m not working on my research, I enjoy watching too many hours of television, reading non-research-related books and running. I find running to be a satisfying, therapeutic break from my studies – especially considering all the beautiful scenery Glasgow has to offer – and am always looking for more Scottish races to participate in.
I believe blogs can be fun and engaging and foster a sense of community, so I’m excited to be able to contribute to this one alongside the PGR blog team. From tips for de-stressing to how to make the most out of the library’s special collections, I hope my posts and advice will resonate with many of you (but if you’re hankering for something more, let me know). As with many people in our technologically-ridden world, social media consumes my life . . . I made my first Twitter account when I was 15, but my posts have gotten marginally better in the decade since, so feel free to find me @danies394 as I, too, try to navigate life as a new PGR!
