Beer and Science: The Pint of Science Festival
Pint of Science is an international festival that takes place annually all around the world 15-17th May. During the festival hundreds of scientists simultaneously stand up and talk about their research to the public. The festival began in 2012 in Oxford, where two PhD students decided that it would be cool to start up an event where scientists could talk about their research in the pub…like they might do on a Friday evening with their friends, but instead to an interested public audience. An important duty of a scientist which is sometimes overlooked is the importance of informing the public about what they are doing, after all, a large proportion of funding for scientific research comes from public sources!
Since 2012 the festival has spread around the world. 2017 marks the fourth year that Glasgow has participated in the festival.. It all began here in 2014, thanks to a keen PG researcher from the department of physics, and it has been growing bigger and better year after year.
This year the Glasgow Pint of Science festival has been predominantly organised by teams of PGRs (from here and Strathclyde) who have each organised 2-3 nights of events that cover a selection of broad themes: Atoms to Galaxies, Our Body, Beautiful Mind, Tech Me Out, Our Society and Planet Earth. A new theme which is being developed this year is: Creative Reactions, where science and art collide; this theme will have a different format to those of the rest of the festival, instead involving an evening art exhibition, where work from artists who have been paired with scientists from the other themed events will be displayed. Here at UofG, we have a team of PGRs working on the organisation of this event for the first time following its successful launch in Cambridge.
Attendance at any of the events requires a ticket. These can be purchased at the Pint of Science website from the 3rd April. Any information can also be found at the website, and it should be noted that events often sell-out online meaning, that no additional tickets can be sold at the door.
